European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
