Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
