The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
