Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Trophy in 882 Days
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hard surfaces
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his maiden trophy for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.
Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a challenging period, winning just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the American major.
His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in particular - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and ultimately splitting with former coach his previous coach.
Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - culminating in a closely contested three-set triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
It is Medvedev's initial trophy after the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hardcourt since March of the previous year.
Victory also indicates Medvedev has won 21 titles at twenty-one various events.
"For the first time I have attended a competition with my both daughters simultaneously, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," stated tennis professional Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching approach and frequent reactions on the tennis court had caused commentators to wonder if his capacity to perform at the elite level was over.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and play assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.
The champion recovered from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the concluding five games to go ahead.
Both players swapped break points in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden professional title, gained dominance to create a decider.
Moutet saved four early-game break points in a close third set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to serve for the match.
Suitably, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
