The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for others, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your jacket you must offer them your pullover too.
The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it represents both humility and faith, a mixture that serious US believers ought to accept.
